Two-dimensional photonic-crystal microwave waveguide
2003
This paper reports on the use of 2D photonic crystals to design microwave waveguides. The waveguide consists of a periodic arrangement of holes, with a square or rectangular cross section, that extends along the waveguide with a central defect defined by the absence of a hole. The theoretical analysis of such a structure is based on a biorthogonal-basis method and provides a full-vector description of the modes guided by the defect. Our results show that such a waveguide can be designed to support only one mode at any operating frequency. This mode is a polarization doublet whose dispersion is controlled by the geometrical parameters, thus permitting the design of a novel polarization-maint…
Endlessly single-mode heat-sink waveguide
1998
Recently, a new form of optical fiber, the photonic crystal fiber, has been reported. This fiber has a hexagonal array of submicrometer air holes running along its length and a lattice site without a hole (a line defect) in its center. The defect acts as a core, confining light that travels along the fiber as a guided mode. This structure can be endlessly single mode, never supporting more than one confined mode no matter what the diameter of the core or the wavelength of the light. Having discovered this effect experimentally and provided a qualitative explanation for the observed behavior, we present here a planar version of this fiber. Periodic arrays of parallel planar fins are placed o…
Radiation model of a TiO2-coated, quartz wool, packed-bed photocatalytic reactor
2010
The radiation field of a packed-bed photocatalytic reactor filled with quartz wool coated with titanium dioxide was modeled using the Monte Carlo technique and the following information: the radiation flux emitted by the lamps, the diameter size distribution of the quartz fiber cloth, the mass of quartz fibers and of TiO2 that was immobilized on the fiber surface as well as the refractive index and the spectral absorption coefficient of the materials of the system. Modeling predictions were validated with radiometer measurements of the transmitted radiation through the reactor, the root mean square error being < 9.7%. Finally, by means of a parametric study, the validated model was used to …
Experimental demonstration of Bloch mode parity change in photonic crystal waveguide
2004
We experimentally show coupling between two photonic crystal waveguide Bloch modes having a different parity. A monomode ridge waveguide etched in a silicon-on-insulator substrate and connecting to the photonic crystal waveguide allows us to excite the even Bloch mode. Transmission measurements, performed on a broad spectral range, show the even mode propagation along the defect line. Then, spectrally resolved near-field patterns obtained by using a scanning near-field optical microscope in collection mode for wavelengths, inside and outside the multimode region of the photonic crystal waveguide, clearly demonstrate coupling phenomenon between even and odd modes.
Efficient excitation of dielectric-loaded surface plasmon-polariton waveguide modes at telecommunication wavelengths
2008
International audience; The excitation of surface plasmon-polariton (SPP) waveguide modes in subwavelength dielectric ridges deposited on a thin gold film has been characterized and optimized at telecommunication wavelengths. The experimental data on the electromagnetic mode structure obtained using scanning near-field optical microscopy have been directly compared to full vectorial three-dimensional finite element method simulations. Two excitation geometries have been investigated where SPPs are excited outside or inside the dielectric tapered region adjoint to the waveguide. The dependence of the efficiency of the SPP guided mode excitation on the taper opening angle has been measured an…
Bloch mode coupling investigation in silicon-on-insulator W1 photonic crystal waveguide
2004
We report in this paper the study of a W1 photonic crystal waveguide which supports two Bloch modes having different parity. A monomode ridge waveguide etched in a Silicon-On-Insulator substrate and connecting to the photonic crystal waveguide allows us to excite the even Bloch mode. Transmission measurements, performed on a broad spectral range, evidence the even mode propagation along the defect line and experimental spectrum is discussed in light of band diagram and FDTD calculations. Then spectrally resolved near-field patterns obtained by using a scanning near field optical microscope in collection mode for wavelengths inside and outside the multimode region of the photonic crystal wav…
